Komets sweep Reading for 8-1-0 start

Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets swept the Royals at Reading in a two-game weekend set for week four of 2014-15 to gain four points and improve to an ECHL best 8-1-0 record, 16 points and .889 win percentage after the first nine games of the season. -ECHL Standings-The Komets have matched their start of 8-1-0 set in 1978 and 1999. In 1978 Fort Wayne improved their start to 10-1-0 before surrendering their second loss of the season.

Friday the Komets began their two-game visit to Reading by clipping the Royals 4-3. Fort Wayne markers came from four different players including Mitchell Heard (F), Thomas Frazee (C), Mike Embach (LW) and Paul Crowder (F). Fort Wayne netminder Pat Nagle earned his fifth win of the year stopping 25 of 28 shots.

Saturday the Komets rallied from two-goal deficits three times and scored three unanswered goals in the last seven minutes of the game to take a 7-6 win and a sweep of the weekend two-game series at Reading. Fort Wayne extended its win streak to three games and continues unbeaten on the road at 5-0-0. The Komets are now 6-0-0 in one-goal games after their fifth straight win over Reading counting last season's playoffs. Heard had a career night scoring two goals and four points while Shawn Szydlowski (RW) posted a three-point evening scoring a goal and adding two assists. Christian Ouellet (RW) also passed three assists in his season debut. Also scoring for Fort Wayne were Eric Faille (RW), James Martin (D), Frazee and Cody Sol (D) who netted the game winner. Goaltender Sami Aittokallio earned his second win in as many starts on the season making 15 saves on 21 shots.Komet leaders-- Mitchell Heard leads the Komets and ranks second in the ECHL with eight goals and 13 points and tops the K's with a +7. He also leads with three first goals.....Four players lead with seven assists each including Matthew Pistilli, Shawn Szydlowski, Mike Embach and James Martin.....Cody Sol leads with 14 penalty minutes while Pistilli and Szydlowski each have the most shots at 28.....Eric Faille leads Fort Wayne rookies with three goals, four assists and seven points.....Martin ranks second among ECHL defensemen with nine points (2g, 7a).....Pat Nagle ranks second among ECHL goaltenders with five wins.....The Komets are tied with Bakersfield (13gp) with 39 goals, but the Komets have played fewer games (9gp) and lead the ECHL with an average of 4.33 goals per game.-see Komets teamstats-Streaking Komets-- Mitchell Heard is riding a six-game point-scoring streak (7g, 4a) and has an ECHL high four-game goal streak (6g). Heard also has points in three straight road games (3g, 4a).....Shawn Szydlowski has a three-game point streak (2g, 3a).....Mike Embach has a three-game point streak (1g, 3a).....Matthew Pistilli has a three-game point and assist streak (3a).....Thomas Frazee has a three-game road point and goal-scoring streak (3g, 1a).....goalie Pat Nagle has a three-game road winning streak.

Road trip continues this week against division rivals-- The Komets continue on the road this week with a morning affair at Kalamazoo Wednesday at 10:30. It's the fourth of 15 meetings this season. The Komets hold a 2-1-0 series lead over the Wings. North Division rival Kalamazoo (6-2-1, 13 points) trails the first place Komets by three points after nine games. The Wings swept both games of a home double-header last weekend against Elmira and are 6-1-1 since losing their first game of the season.Friday the Komets make their first of three trips to Toledo this season for a 7:15pm start at the Huntington Center (7,431). The third-place Walleye (6-2-0, 12 points) trail Fort Wayne by four points in the North Division after eight games and are riding a four-game win streak. Last year the Komets were unbeaten (3-0-0) in three trips to Toledo and 8-0-1 overall after nine meetings. The Walleye are idle this week until the Komets visit Friday. Saturday the Komets complete the week with a 7:35pm faceoff against the Cyclones (4-2-1, nine points) in the first of four trips to Cincinnati's U.S. Bank Arena (6,955). It will be the first meeting since Cincinnati eliminated the Komets from the second round of the ECHL playoffs last year. The Komets were 5-1-2 against the Cyclones in seven meetings during 2013-14 and a perfect 4-0-0 in four regular season trips to Cincy. The Cyclones have lost their last two outings and are 3-1-1 in their last five games. Cincinnati hosts Orlando Thursday before welcoming the Komets Saturday night.-see Komet schedule and results-

Next Komet home game, Friday, Nov. 21, features TEDDY BEAR TOSS-- The Komets will return home on Friday, November 21 to host the Kalamazoo Wings at 8pm on Teddy Bear Toss Night. It's the second annual Teddy Bear Toss game presented y Huntington University. Fans are invited to bring new or gently used stuffed animals to the game for the big toss and celebration after the Komets' first goal. All stuffed animals collected will benefit the Disorderly Bear Den of Good Bears of the World!REPORT CARD NIGHT #1 Saturday, Nov. 22-- The Komets will have two PHP Report Card Nights this year. Students with an "A" or "A Equivalent" on their most recent report card earn a free ticket and have a chance to win one of two $1,000 U.S. Savings Bonds for future education on Report Card nights Saturday, Nov. 22, at 7:30pm when the Komets host the Greenville Road Warriors. Report Card Night #2 is slated for Saturday, Feb. 21. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets early.TIP-A-KOMET Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Applebee's-- The Komets invite all fans to the Tip-A-Komet benefit at Applebee’s North Clinton location by the Coliseum Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 6:30pm-8pm. Fans have a chance to be served dinner by a Komet player as the entire team will be on-hand for the special night at Applebee’s. The show airs on WPTA TV 21Alive from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, 3869 Ice Way in Fort Wayne, featuring highlights, interviews and call-ins. Komet players and personnel will serve as co-hosts with 21Alive's Tommy Schoegler. Tonight, Monday, Nov. 10, forward Matthew Pistilli will be Tommy's guest. All Komet fans are welcome to attend.
