Komets sweep week 7; Streak to top of ECHL

Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets swept three games in three nights for week seven of 2014-15 to improve to 14-4-0 and an ECHL best 28 points after 18 games. It's the fourth time this season the Komets have taken a sweep of games played in a one-week period.

The week began with the Komets celebrating Thanksgiving with a 2-1 shootout win over the Indy Fuel at the Memorial Coliseum. Garret Meurs' first goal of the season (and first ECHL career point) was enough to keep Fort Wayne in the game and send it to extra time knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation. After a scoreless overtime the Komets prevailed in the shootout 2-1 to take the holiday win and improve on Thanksgiving night in Fort Wayne to 34-16-4 after 54 traditional Turkey Night games. Goaltender Pat Nagle earned the win making 28 saves on 29 shots and stopping four out of five in the shootout.

Friday the Komets traveled to Kalamazoo and upended the Wings 4-1 to remain unbeaten in Kalamazoo after three visits this season and improve to 5-1-0 after six meetings with the Wings. The Komets spotted Kalamazoo with a goal before scoring four unanswered tallies by four different players including Eric Faille, Shawn Szydlowski, Meurs and Nathan Condon. Netminder Eric Levine earned the win stopping 20 of 21 shots in his first ECHL start.

Saturday the Komets returned home and finished the week with a 6-4 win over Orlando. Three-point nights were enjoyed by Meurs, Christian Ouellet and James Martin. Meurs extended his goal-scoring streak to three games scoring two goals and adding an assist while Ouellet and Martin had a goal and two assists each. Szydlowski logged his second two-goal game of the season to complete the Fort Wayne scoring. Nagle snagged his second straight win making 19 saves on 23 shots.The week ahead-- The Komets will skate two road games this weekend beginning with a 7:35pm faceoff Friday at Cincinnati (7-6-2, 16 points). It's the second of seven meetings. The Komets earned a 5-4 shootout win in the first meeting Nov. 15 at U.S. Bank Arena (6,955). The Cyclones are 3-2-1 in their last five games and 3-5-2 in their last 10. Cincy is in fifth place in the North Division trailing the first-place Komets by 12 points after 15 games. Cincinnati will host Utah Wednesday before welcoming the Komets Friday.

Saturday the Komets face intrastate rival the Fuel at Indy at 7:35pm. The Komets lead the series 4-0-0 with seven meetings remaining. Saturday's game will be the third of five trips to the renovated Fairgrounds Coliseum at Indy. The Komets clipped the Fuel 2-1 in a shootout in the last meeting on Thanksgiving night in Fort Wayne. Indy is slated to host Evansville Wednesday and Florida Friday before the Komets visit Saturday.

Komet streaks-- The Komets are riding a three-game winning streak.....Meurs has a three-game point and goal-scoring streak (4g, 1a).....The Komets allowed two power play markers in Saturday's 6-4 home win against Orlando snapping a run of 10 straight successful penalty kills over the previous three games played.

Shooting the puck-- The Komets out-shot their opponents in each game of the week and totaled 111 shots while allowing 73. Fort Wayne is 11-1-0 when outshooting opponents. The Komets held their opponents to less than 25 shots in two of the three games of the week to improve to 7-0-0 when allowing less than 25 shots in a game.

Shootouts-- After winning the shootout on Thanksgiving night against Indy 2-1, the Komets rank at the top of the ECHL with seven shootout goals while allowing three after three shootout games.

Hot November-- The Komets had their best November, posting a 9-3-0 record for the dozen games played (Home 4-1-0, Road 5-2-0), since November of 1992 when they were 9-3-2 for the month in the old International Hockey League.

December, home for the holidays-- The Komets have 12 games slated for December, split evenly with six at home and six on the road. The Komets will skate four road games before returning home to host Toledo for the first Sunday 5pm game at the Memorial Coliseum Dec. 14. After Christmas, the Komets will host three holiday games in five nights including Friday, Dec. 27, Monday, Dec. 29 and the annual New Year's Eve game Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Komet leaders-- Szydlowski continues to lead with 20 points.....Mitchell Heard, who is on call-up to Lake Erie, leads with 10 goals.....James Martin leads the Komets and ECHL defensemen with 13 assists. Martin ranks second with the Komets and leads ECHL defensemen with 16 points.....Eric Faille leads Komet rookies with seven goals, eight assists and 15 points.....Nagle (9-3-0) leads Komet goalies with 2.46 goals-against average and .907 save percentage (minimum 240 minutes). Nagle's nine wins rank second among ECHL goaltenders.-Komets Teamstats-Schrock, Embach, Szydlowski, Nagle at Tilted Kilt Tuesday-- Fans will have a chance to visit with Komet players Kaleigh Schrock, Mike Embach, Shawn Szydlowski and Pat Nagle this Tuesday at the Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery in Jefferson Pointe (4541 Illinois Road) in Fort Wayne from 6:30pm-8pm. All Komet fans are welcome to take advantage of many photo opportunities and autographs.

Komets on MyTV Saturday from Indy-- Live telecasts of select Komet road games will be broadcast on Fort Wayne digital and cable channels including digital channel 33.2 and cable channels Comcast SD 18 and 252, Comcast HD 1018, Direct TV 34, Frontier SD 9 and Frontier HD 509 throughout the season. 21Alive's Tommy Schoegler and Kent Hormann will handle the play-by-play. MyTV will be on hand for two road games in December including this Saturday's Komet game at Indy starting at 7:30pm. MyTV also plans to telecast the Komet game at Evansville Saturday, Dec. 13. The Tilted Kilt is the official watch zone for Komet games on MyTV. Sound Off with the Komets on 21Alive Monday nights-- The Komets, 21Alive and SportONE/Parkview Icehouse present Sound Off with the Komets, a live weekly telecast each Monday night at 7:30. The show airs on WPTA TV 21Alive from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, 3869 Ice Way in Fort Wayne, featuring highlights, interviews and call-ins. Komet players and personnel will serve as co-hosts with 21Alive's Tommy Schoegler. Tonight, Dec. 1,defenseman James Martin will be Tommy's guest. All Komet fans are welcome to attend.
