Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets upended the visiting Missouri Mavericks 6-4 in the first of back-to-back home games against their former CHL rival. The Fort Wayne clinches home-ice advantage in the first round of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs with the victory Saturday night at the War Memorial Coliseum in front of 8,007.The team's leading scorer Shawn Szydlowski stole the show scoring five goals, and netting three of them short-handed. It's only the fifth time in the 63-year history of Komet hockey in Fort Wayne that a player has deposited five goals in a single game. Also, Szydlowski ties the ECHL record of most short-handed goals by a player in a game.Christian Ouellet scored the other goal for Fort Wayne while Eric Faille dished five assists. The Komets' all-time record is six assists in a single game which has been accomplished three times.Missouri mounted a rally in the second period pulling within a goal after falling behind 3-0 after the first period on goals by Andrew Courtney and Geoff Walker. The Komets opened the third frame with Szydlowski's third goal of the game for the hat trick and second shorty. Tyler Currier hit the net for Missouri and Courtney added another tally but Szydlowski negated each marker with additional goals for a three-goal third period and the win. Pat Nagle earned the win in his first start since returning from Utica this week making 31 saves on 35 shots while Josh Robinson suffered his 10th loss of the season allowing five goals on 38 shots.The Komets improve to 2-0-0 against Missouri and will host the Mavericks again Sunday at 5pm to complete the season series.
