Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets are moving on to the Western Conference finals.
Friday night the Komets dismissed the Grizzlies at Utah 5-3 to take a 4-0 sweep of the conference semifinals and advance to the third round of the ECHL Kelly Cup playoffs.
Shawn Szydlowski starred with two goals and an assist for a three-point night. Garrett Thompson also netted a pair while Trevor Cheek contributed his third marker of the post-season.
Szydlowski opened the scoring at 4:21 of the first period before Utah came back to tie at 7:43. Thompson put the Komets up 2-1 with 1:27 remaining to send the Komets into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.In the second frame Cheek gave the Komets a 3-1 lead at 7:39 before Utah answered at 11:14 to pull within a goal.
The Grizzlies knotted the score at 3-3 to start the third period at 6:36 but the Komets rallied with Thompson's second of the match at 8:16 and Szydlowski sealed it with an empty netter at 19:45.
Komet goaltender Pat Nagle collected his sixth straight win of the playoffs in his 11th straight start making 26 saves on 29 shots. Utah's Mark Owuya logged the loss on 25 saves.
Now the Komets await their opponent for the next round. Fort Wayne will face the winner of the Missouri-Allen series in a third round best-of-seven series.
