Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets spoiled the Mallards home opener last night at the IWireless Center in Moline, Illinois, 6-2. After spotting Quad City the first goal of the game the Komets returned fire with a pair of goals before the Mallards answered to knot the game at 2-2. Then it was all Fort Wayne as the Komets netted four unanswered goals to claim game one of 2016-17.Jamie Schaafsma scored a pair and Shawn Szydlowski, Gabriel Beaupre, Jason Binkley and Garrett Thompson also scored. Mike Cazzola scored his first three pro points, all assists, in his first pro appearance. Goaltender Pat Nagle posted his third straight season opening win with the Komets stopping 23 of 25 shots. The Komets out-shot the Mallards 28-25 and were 1/2 on the power play and 4/5 on the penalty kill. -Gamesheet-

Both teams return to Fort Wayne for the Komets' home opener tonight at 7:30 on Sweetwater Ice at the Memorial Coliseum. Tonight's match will complete a home-and-home series to launch the 2016-17 ECHL campaign. Fans are encouraged to arrive early tonight. 65th anniversary festivities will begin at 7:30pm sharp.

The Mallards will be making their fourth visit to the Coliseum for a Fort Wayne home opener. The Komets are a perfect 3-0-0 in home openers against Quad City. The Komets upended the Mallards 8-3 in UHL action when Quad City was last in town for a home opener on Oct. 21, 2006.The Komets have now won their last three straight season openers and are looking for their third straight home opening win. Fort Wayne is 40-18-6 after 64 home openers.

Komets on the air-- Komet games are scheduled to air this season on WOWO AM 1190 and FM 107.5. Bob Chase will be sharing the schedule with Shane Albahrani, who is handling this weekend's games.
