Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets made the best of their only game of the week, defeating the visiting Quad City Mallards Friday night 5-1. Fort Wayne takes a 3-0-0 series lead over division rival Quad City with nine meetings remaining, four at home.
Shawn Szydlowski scored the first goal of the game with 14 ticks of the clock remaining in the first period to push his point-scoring streak to eight games (six goals, seven assists) and establish a three-game goal-scoring streak (three goals). Trevor Cheek netted his first of two goals of the night at 16:31 of the second period before Quad City's Michael Parks opened the third period at the 18-second mark to pull the Mallards within one. The Komets responded with three unanswered goals. Kyle Thomas and Jason Binkley scored two goals in three minutes 17 seconds and Cheek potted his second of the night while short handed with 43 seconds remaining in the match to seal the win. Cheek added an assist on Binkley's marker for his second three-point night of the year.Fort Wayne goaltender Eric Hartzell earned his third straight home win making 31 saves on 32 shots. The Komets will take the rest of the weekend off and then prepare for the annual Thanksgiving game in Fort Wayne Thursday when Kalamazoo visits for a 7:30pm holiday faceoff on Sweetwater Ice at the Memorial Coliseum. The Komets will skate at Toledo Friday, Nov. 25 at 7:15pm and return home to host Quad City again Saturday, Nov. 26 at 7:30pm.Military Appreciation Weekend-- Thanksgiving night and Saturday, Nov. 26, is Military Appreciation Weekend as the Komets pay tribute to the U.S. Military with special jerseys both nights. A silent auction for each game-worn jersey will be held each night, with the final bids being placed during the 2nd Intermission Saturday. Proceeds will support the Military Families program of Associated Churches. Also at the games on Thanksgiving and Saturday, Nov. 26, Komets Kare Package returns to benefit our veterans through the Veterans Administration Health System. Items collected will be distributed to over 45,000 veterans in the VA throughout Northeast Indiana. Non-food items are sought, such as gift certificates, games, toys, magazines, personal toiletries, coloring books, caps, gloves, blankets, cleaning supplies, T-shirts, underwear and more will be accepted.
REPORT CARD NIGHT Saturday, Nov. 26-- The Komets present the annual PHP Report Card Night Saturday, Nov. 26 when they host Quad City at 7:30pm. Students with an "A" or "A Equivalent" on their most recent report card earn a free ticket and have a chance to win a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bonds for future education. Report cards or letters showing an "A" or equivalent can be taken to the Coliseum Ticket Office any time before the game.
