Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets reached the Christmas break with a 5-2 home victory over the Toledo Walleye Saturday night in front of a crowd of 7,023. Coupled with a 5-3 setback to the visiting Kalamazoo Wings the night before, the Komets were 1-1-0 for Week 11 of 2018-19 and improved to 14-12-1 and 29 points after 27 games.
With the Saturday night win, head coach Gary Graham reached his 500th point with his 229th win as the Komets' head coach. Graham becomes the fourth Fort Wayne head coach to reach 500 points. Al Sims (437 wins), Greg Puhalski (271 wins) and Ken Ullyot (264 wins) also hit the milestone.
For the week Shawn Szydlowski had two goals, including the game winner Saturday night, and added an assist for three points. Jake Kamrass scored a goal and three points. Scoring a goal and an assist each were Mason Baptista, Brady Shaw and Anthony Petruzzelli. Justin Hodgman dished two assists and Jamie Schaafsma and Jordan Sims each scored a goal. Lukas Hafner earned Saturday night's win making 21 saves on 23 shots. The Komets out-shot their opponents 72-49, were 2/14 on the power play and 7/10 on the penalty kill.
Streaking Komets-- Jake Kamrass has a six-game point-scoring streak (3g, 4a) and a five-game home point streak (3g, 3a).....Mason Baptista is riding a four-game point streak (3g, 2a) and a three-game home point streak (2g, 1a).....Shawn Szydlowski has points in three straight games (3g, 2a)....Justin Hodgman has points in five straight road games (4g, 4a).
Komet leaders-- Hodgman leads with 24 assists, 33 points and +8.....Shaw and J.C. Campagna lead with 14 goals.....Hodgman and Campagna lead with four power play goals apiece.....Szydlowski leads with seven power play assists.....Taylor Crunk leads with 74 penalty minutes.After the Christmas break-- The Komets will get back into action with four games in five nights starting Thursday when Kalamazoo visits for a 7:30pm faceoff on Sweetwater Ice at the Memorial Coliseum. Saturday, Dec. 29, the Komets host Central division leader Cincinnati at 7:30pm before traveling to Toledo Sunday, Dec. 30 for a 7:15pm start at the Huntington Center. Then it's the traditional New Year's Eve game in Fort Wayne when the Brampton Beast visit Monday at 7:30pm to help the Komets ring in the new year.
