New look Komets split opening weekend

Fort Wayne, IN – The Komets split an opening weekend series with the Indy Fuel. The club prepares for two division home games this weekend. The Toledo Walleye visit on Friday night, while the Wheeling Nailers make their first trip to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.

About last week – The Komets gained their first win of the season on Friday night with a 4-1 win at Indy. Captain, Morgan Adams-Moisan, scored on his first shot of the season at 6:48 of the first period. Matt Wedman quickly followed with his first tally of the season at 7:07 to give the Komets a 2-0 lead after the first period. In the second, Shawn Szydlowski was charged a five-minute major penalty for slashing and game misconduct. On the ensuing power play, the Fuel scored their only goal of the night at 8:18 to make the score 2-1 after 40 minutes. In the final frame, Nolan Volcan scored his first professional goal at 14:29. Ture Linden added his first pro tally on an empty net at 18:29. Komets goaltender Francois Brassard got the win by making 17 saves on 18 shots. The Komet outshot the Fuel 37-18.

On Saturday, the Fuel spoiled the home opener by bouncing the Komets 3-1. Indy scored the first three goals of the game before Alexis D'Aoust netted a power-play goal, with an assist from Shawn Szydlowski, at 16:02 of the third period. Indy goaltender, Zach Driscoll, turned away 32 of 33 Komet shots for the victory. Tyler Parks made 20 saves in the loss.

Special K’s—The Komets scored one power-play goal on five chances. The team skated short-handed six times, giving up two goals.

Next week – The Komets host Toledo on Friday starting at 8:00 p.m. and Wheeling on Saturday with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.    

Icing the puck —  Jesse Kallechy won his Komet coaching debut on Friday. Morgan Adams-Moisan was named the 38th captain in the franchise's history. Shawn Szydlowski was credited with an assist in Saturday’s loss to Indy. The vet now has 488 career points as a Komet, one away from tying Barry Scully for 13th all-time. The home opener on Saturday drew 9,493 fans. The most for a home opener since October 12, 2019 (9,505). Nolan Volan and Ture Linden registered their first career pro points in the season opening win at Indy. The Komets averaged 35 shots on net over the opening split with Indy. The Komets play Toledo and Wheeling this weekend. The team won the season series against both teams last season.

Upcoming Promotions

Ghostbusters Night Friday, October 27 --  The Komets will wear special Ghostbuster jerseys, courtesy of the Windward Foundation. All proceeds from the silent jersey auction will benefit the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center.
