Komets fall in series opener
The Komets opened the best-of-seven Western Conference Final on Friday night in Independence, Missouri, versus the top-seeded Kansas City Mavericks.
 
After a scoreless first period, the Mavericks ended the deadlock at 2:04 of the second frame. The game turned into a goaltenders duel as Kansas City’s Jack LaFontaine stopped 15 shots through forty minutes, while the Komets Sam Jonsson turned aside 16.
 
In the third period, the Mavericks scored at 1:32, 9:32, 14:59, and 17:39, with the lone Komet goal coming from Kirill Tyutyayev at 12:22 to break the shutout, making the final score 5-1. Jonsson took the loss, making 32 saves.
